What is a Mammogram?

A Mammogram is an x-ray examination of the breast that helps to detect breast diseases in women. Advanced Imaging Center is proud to offer digital mammography, the newest technology for breast cancer detection. Digital mammography is performed just like a traditional mammogram, however a digital image is produced rather than a film image (very similar to the difference between a digital camera and a film camera).

Why should I have a Digital Mammogram?

Breast cancer affects nearly 1 in 8 women and is the second leading cause of cancer deaths in women. Many studies have shown that early detection is vital to the successful treatment of breast cancer. Digital mammography allows the radiologist to view and manipulate the images รข€" allowing them to zoom in on suspicious areas that may be early signs of cancer.

How long will the exam take?

The exam takes only a few minutes to complete.

What do I do before the exam?

Do not wear any deodorant, talcum powder or lotion under your arms or on your breasts on the day of the exam. These can look like abnormal spots on your x-ray.

What will the exam be like?

You will be asked to disrobe from the waist up and change into a hospital gown. You will then be escorted to the exam room. One of our specially trained technologists will position your breast on the mammography unit. Your breast will be pressed firmly between two platforms to get the best possible image. You will need to remain still for the exam because movement can make the images blurry.

What happens with my test results?

One of our specially trained radiologists will study the x-ray images from your exam. A report will be sent to your doctor, nurse practitioner, or physician assistant. Since the images are digital, your healthcare provider can view them from their office alongside the radiologist's report. They can then discuss the results with you in detail.
